New Rig
«

I'm building a new rig and I'm having an issue. I cannibalized the hard drives, floppy drive, and DVD+/-RW drive from my old rig. In booting the new system up, I'm only able to start Windows in Safe Mode, and the DVD drive is not being recognized. This is an issue, since all of the drivers I need to install are on CD. I have double checked the connections and the cable is tight and the drive is getting power. Any ideas or suggestions? I also posted this issue at a PC tech forum, but haven't had any responses yet.

also, did you just put in your old hard drive and just turn it on? or did you reinstall winders? prolly a good idea to reinstall

I'm going to reinstall Windows tomorrow, but want to backup some files first. I really don't want to lose all of my MP3's, photos, and videos. But I still need to get the DVD drive recognized otherwise I'm at an impass. Thankfully, my hard drives are being recognized.

The drive is not being recognized in Bios, but I just found the manual, so I can move the jumper. It was set on cable select which worked with the old rig, but not with the new one. Only 3 options (CS, master, slave), so it should take long.
Just tried all 3 options and no luck. I'm in the process of backing up the files on my hard drives. Once that is done, I want to switch them since the current slave drive is substantially faster than the master, and then format and reload Windows.

Still no luck in finding the optical drive. I'm starting to wonder if the motherboard isn't recognizing it because it is an IDE drive.
Here
is the site for the motherboard from the manufacturer.
As for your question you posted while I was typing, it worked as of last Wednesday, when I was playing a CD.

I was right. My friend who was supposed to help me with the build just got back this morning from his wife's mothers funeral. He came over and confirmed my suspicion that the mobo was misrepresented by the seller, and we found the solution. I had to buy a SATA drive for either the hard drive or the DVD drive. Got a new hard drive, switched the jumper on the DVD drive to master from cable select and its working. Right now my hard drive is formatting! Now I just need to have that finish up and then I can get back to killing you guys Monday night.
Uhhh, check that. Still having issues getting the DVD drive recognized by Windows. BIOS recognizes it, Windows finds it in safe mode, but not in normal mode. Its putting me at an impass again. I can't finish installing the drivers if I can't get it to work.

hmm...weird
i see that it has one IDE connector, and while you should be able to have both on the same ide cable, it is better to have the dvd on it's own (for speed reasons) and they tell you that your primary hard drive should be the master and so should your dvdrw. hence the need for the SATA. but it should work now that you have it. maybe set the drive back to master??

try this....shouldn't harm anything even if it doesn't work:
1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
2. Restart your computer.

Whoah! How does one play with the registry like that?
Forgive me if I missed something above sox, but if you have drivers to install - wouldnt' they be better coming from the web anyway? I realize you need your drive working but in the meantime...

I'd love to be using the web with the new rig, but until I can get the drivers installed for the motherboard, the Cat-5 plugs are not functioning. In order to get the Cat-5 ports working, I need a working optical drive...
I sent an email to LG this morning, but haven't had a response yet, but it was Sunday so no big suprise. I hope to have an answer tomorrow.

what that reg edit above will do is reset the drivers for the optical drives and when you reboot it will find it/them and reinstall the drivers
i have actually done it before, and there was no harm done, and it worked.

I'll give that a shot tomorrow, right now, I'm off to bed. I really don't want to be playing around in the registry fatigued.
