i haven't had any problem with rankings, but i haven't played on any unranked/modded servers either:

It's not needed to play on any servers, just for a quick fix of the problem i guess

i guess it's not critical either way, but it's supposed to address the issue that people are losing ranks when playin on ranked then unranked/modded servers. I havent had any problem with that, but i used the patch anyway. It's just a .exe file that replaces the one in your COD4 folder.
