While I do not know a ton about video cards - keep in mind the chipset on the card is often more important than the amount of VRAM it has. There are likely 128meg cards that will outperform many 256 megs ones...

this statement is true jimmyt. some what less important is the chipset though. the bus speed is the key. alot of 256mb cards move the data at a rate twice as slow as the 128mb cards that have been around and have been tweaked more by their respective companies. so you in effect get a card with half the ram working twice as fast so no real difference.

Yeah what he said.
Some companies even overclock their cards for you to get you a litle better performance. I just bought an NVIDIA 6600GT w/ 128 mb of ram that runs circlles around my old FX5200 w/ 256mb of ram., for less than $200. If your looking to go w/ Nvidia, probably anything above a 5500 will get the job done., and don't be afraid to get a card with 128 mb, as it is not outdated as everyone thinks

on that thought Bone, can't you conpensate for the lesser VRAM by increasing your virtual memory setting
or is that not necessarily directly related?
also, would not almost any pc living today handle 8x agp or higher? that may be a concern if it is an older pc

not really the virtual memory has nothing to do with the video ram on your card.

also keep in mind, if you have an integrated vid card, then most likely you don't have an AGP slot on your mobo, you would have to get a PCI Vid card, which then limits you big time. i believe there are decent Nvidia and ATI cards for pci. just have to find em.

I have AGP and PCI slots available. It was just cheaper to get it w/ the integrated at the time. I'd really like to stay away from anything that is OC'ed. I don't feel comfortable w/ something that needs to be OC'ed to run fast enough to do what I need. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions though. I know this thread usually makes it's way around the board a few times a year.
