Even if you haven't installed new drivers they can randomly bork themselves up.  Unlcean shutdown, risky programs, jupiter's mass fluctuating, Al Gore speaking, etc.

Tell it not to restart like Joe said, maybe that will help with some insight to the issue.  I've never had a hard disk die quietly, always with that loud screeching and parts failing.  Maybe that's just me and my tinkering tho
