My brother recently sent me a video file in the h.264 file format.  My parents asked if I could possibly burn it, which is possible. The issue is that I'm cheap, and since I don't own the license agreement on that codec, it won't burn properly.  My trial version of Nero won't do it, the full version of Nero will.  All for the cost of $50.  If I burned videos often I would probably spend the money.  But I may burn one disc a year, if that.  Does anyone know of a means to make it burnable without the license agreement, such as a file conversion?

your best bet is to get a codec pack, which will allow you to do anything, view, burn, etc.  I use this one http://www.cccp-project.net/
it contains any and all codec you will ever need.  and to make a dvd, use dvd flick
http://www.dvdflick.net/
it will work with any file format that you have available codecs for.
It's a little tricky to get working the first few times, but it does work, i use it all the time.

you might want to test a few small videos first, and not choose to burn them (to save on blanks) to get used to the interface and options.  there's options to just create the dvd folder (it will be called video_ts) on your hard drive rather than burning to a disc, so you can play around with them.  the codec pack also comes with media player classic homecinema which is a great media player and can play dvds from the video_ts folders.

This will also burn things and you don't have to download codecs or other pesky software.

But yea, what smoke said.

Thanks Smoke!  I have the Soviet codec pack already since I use that to watch my torrents.  I just need that software.  I'll give it a shot tomorrow when I get home from work.

As for JT's suggestion, I'll take it under consideration, but I really would like to keep my computer in working condition.

nero uses it's own codecs, and i don't think they are as good anyway.  there might be a way to force nero into using the other free codecs, so you can still use their software, but I don't know off hand...
