While I have had no issues with my Seagate FreeAgent external drive, which I have had for a few years, I now use drive enclosures instead.  Buy a drive enclosure (I happen to use these ones:  http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=28596 but there are a ton of good enclosures out there) and then put a Western Digital or Seagate drive you've bought separately into it.  I have bought 3 setups like this and not had an issue - and they are cheaper.  What can I say - I'm thrifty.   Tongue

The only downside to buying something like the Freeagent external is that you are paying more, and you can't swap out the HD (easily) when the drive in it goes kaput.

I have two Western Digital externals that haven't given me any problems.  One I use often to store pictures, music, and videos on it the other is for everything else.  The only issue is if they fail switching out the drive is a pain.  JT's suggestion isn't a bad idea, and it is cheaper.  But I wouldn't hesitate with either a Western Digital or Seagate drive.

I've got 8 Hitachi's running in a RAID (or two), and two more in external enclosures (surprisingly, Rosewill has a really nice one for about $20).  It's hard to beat the deathstar . . .errr . . . umm. . . DeskStars.  They are often the drive of choice in our large SANs and NASs and are rock solid.
