Let us all take a moment and pray for those who lost their lives (heard it is in the thousands) and for their familes. Unlike a tragedy like Sept-11, there was nothing that could have been done about this. I know we sometimes take the weather for granted, but after experiancing something like this, our eyes are once again opened to the fact that we really are at nature's mercy.
Goin to the gas subject and how this hurricane affected the country, in Minnesota, I filled tank in morning (8am) at 2.59, by 12 it was 2.79 and then by 2 it was 2.99 and was rumored by employees at our local gas station that price would end at 3.19 by end of day. .60 cent raise in 12 hours.... it's unreal.

There is so much more to this than gas prices and over zealous media outlets. The mayor of New Orleans has now said that at the very least hundreds are dead, but more likely it is in the thousands. Many more are stranded in hospitals and attics, without proper sanitation or climate control. Widespread looting is rampant, and hindering the evacuations. Half the city is now homeless.
