Hey Guys, I just got through the Grueling task of uninstalling Gizmo.  It took me about 45 mins.  Shocked Angry

I don't know when, or why it happened, but it installed a program called "Bonjour".  This thing is evil!...

It ate up all my bandwidth, and simply refused to shut down.  I noticed that my net was slow yesterday, and got to digging for the problem today when it was still slow.  I tried to connect to the UO server, and my ping was showing up at 600 in ASE.  I finally narrowed it down to a process called "MDNSResponder".  This was the culprit.  Now that I'm rid of it, my net is back to normal.  I just wanted to give you guys a heads up in case it happens to you.   Undecided

Bonjour isn't spyware per se.  And while I noticed mdnsresponder running the other day (and couldn't kill it) i meant to investigate but never managed to do so.

Bonjour is (this is great) an apple thing.  Yeah, MAC stuff.  Go figure Tongue

Everything I've read (and am testing/tinkering with now) says that simply getting rid of mdnsblahbity.exe and killing it will "fix" yer problem.  I've not had any problem with anything like that sucking up bandwidth (one with limited bandwidth from a crippled lan tends to pay attention) and have had zero problems with gizmo yet.

(just came across this)

Hi all,

I work on Gizmo Project. Let me clear up some things.

mDNSResponder.exe is a Windows Service that is part of Bonjour. Bonjour (previously known as Rendezvous) was created by Apple:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/

What Bonjour does for Gizmo is it finds two or more Gizmo's that may be behind the same network and sets up a P2P connection to each other.

Because other applications may install the Bonjour Service, the Gizmo Project installer/uninstaller has to try to intelligently determine if Gizmo is the one installing it. This is probably where the issue is with some users. We'll look into it furthur to make sure Bonjour ALWAYS gets uninstalled if we install it.

If you do not wish it installed, We posted an application here for you to download that will remove the Bonjour Windows Service from your system :

http://gizmoproject.com/jasmine TurnOffBonjour.exe

Thanks,
emartin

While i do not aprove of them not telling me it was on here and running (or able to kill it), i dont think its as harmful as you say

Your Neighborhood Friendly Tinkerer.

EDIT:  http://gizmoproject.com/jasmine/TurnOffBonjour.exe does indeed remove bonjour/mdnsthingy from yer puter if you are worried Smiley (tested! not tinkered! ha!)

That's what I used to get rid of it gHoTi.  Although, I may have spoken too soon.  Cry  As far as browsing the net goes, my speeds are pretty much back to normal.  But, as far as the game goes, my pings shot right back up. Cry Cry  I'm running a virus scan and spyware scan as we speak to see if there is another problem.  Undecided

Yeah, the only problem I've seen with it so far, is that if/when you run a gizmo update, you will have to remove bonjour again manually untill they fix it on their side.
